What to do in Split?
Split, the second largest city in the Republic of Croatia, is located at the coast of mid Dalmatia and there is something special about it that keeps you coming back time after time.
If you haven’t sat at one of the cafes at Riva with obligatory sunglasses on your nose, you have not yet experienced the true spirit of this town. Here, you can completely relax while watching bypassers with the background of palm trees, sea bathed in the sun, which is easily navigated by ferries, but also by some of the world's largest cruise ships.
After your obligatory coffee, take a walk down Marmont street where you will find the perfect combination of art history and modern living; historical library and reading room for Francophiles, today Alliance Francaise, Split’s first cinema – Karaman , a unique fish market with a lack of flies caused by the smell of sulfur coming from the nearby thermal spas, art nouveau building Duplančić, Venetian bastion, Croatian national theatre and the Church of Our Lady of Health. The contemporary touch is added by the exhibition spaces, numerous opportunities for shopping and the Pirja fountain.
Ensure to make enough space and time in your schedule to wonder around Diocletian's palace, the biggest and the best preserved late antique palace in the world. Its cellars, alleys and squares hide many interesting things. Be sure to look for the narrow alley called "Pust' me proć", and you will experience a true cross-section of history at the Peristyle: from the granite columns from Luxor, through the Gothic palace, the Renaissance floor immediately above, to the baroque balconies and the Romanesque campanile. The palace is particularly colorful, and its charming cafes and small hotels miraculously fit perfectly into the historical story.
Go to St. Duje’s cathedral, one of the smallest and oldest cathedrals in the world and after walk through the Golden gate to the statue of Grgur Ninski – grab his toe and make a wish!
Split and the islands across look best from several viewpoints of Marjan, a forest park to the top of which you can walk, discovering lush vegetation, small churches and a zoo. Marjan is called the lungs of Split, and we are sure that after breathing the fresh air at the top, you will get new inspiration for exploring this magical city.
